Why Do Parents Wash Newborn Clothes Before First Use?
Many parents choose to wash newly purchased baby clothes before first use. Especially during the newborn period, this has become almost a routine practice, as it is recommended by many healthcare professionals. The main reason is simple: a newborn’s skin is far more delicate than an adult’s.
Washing newly purchased baby clothes before first use is a common practice among parents.
This is because a newborn’s skin is thinner, and its natural protective barrier is not yet fully developed. As a result, parents wash baby clothes before use to remove anything the garments may have been exposed to during manufacturing, storage, transportation, or retail display.
In addition, newly manufactured textiles may contain processing aids, dust particles, or residues that can accumulate throughout the production, distribution, and retail process. These are among the reasons why parents prefer to wash baby clothes before first use.
This precaution is especially important for newborns and premature babies, whose skin tends to be even more sensitive.
But what if there was a way to make this precaution unnecessary?
How Did Clean&Safe Begin?
In 2017, we asked ourselves a simple question:
Could newborns’ first clothes be prepared in a way that would make pre-washing unnecessary?
Yes. The story of Clean&Safe did not begin as a marketing idea. It began as an engineering question.
At that time, we were already manufacturing certified organic baby clothing and hospital discharge products. However, as two textile engineers, we often kept asking ourselves how our 30 years of experience could be transformed into something more meaningful for babies. The question that guided us was simple:
How can we make a newborn’s first clothing safer?
That same year, this idea became one of the key objectives of our KOSGEB R&D project. We began working on ways to specially clean newborn and premature baby garments like hospital sets or essentials, prepare them for safe use straight out of the package, and keep them protected until they reached the baby.
As our research progressed, we realized that this need should not be limited to premature babies. All newborns have delicate skin that deserves special consideration. We then redesigned our fabrics, developed textile structures with no dyes on the surface that touches the baby’s skin, and worked on unique cleaning processes designed to minimize chemical residues on the finished garment.
We also created a dedicated Clean&Safe packaging unit within our facility. Designed and maintained with operating-room-level hygiene standards, this area allowed us to protect each garment until the moment it was needed.
After nearly two years of research and development, we filed a patent application for the integrated method we had developed on August 7, 2019.
The Patent Journey Was More Challenging Than We Expected
On August 7, 2019, we filed both the Clean&Safe trademark application and a patent application for the method we had developed. We believed our approach was truly unique. However, having that originality officially recognized required a much longer and more demanding technical review process than we had anticipated.
The first examination report arrived in 2021. It cited three different patents (two from China and one from the United States) and asked us to demonstrate how our method differed from these existing approaches from a technical perspective.
Rather than simply describing our own work, we carefully studied each referenced patent, analyzed the methods they used, and documented the technical differences of our approach. We responded with a 23-page technical evaluation report prepared with the level of detail and rigor expected in academic research. After months of technical review, our explanations were accepted by the Turkish Patent Office, and the patent process moved forward.
But the journey was not over yet…
During a second examination in 2023, concerns were raised about whether our method involved a sufficient inventive step. Once again, we revisited our technical documentation, refined the way we presented our invention, and prepared a second technical report consisting of 11 pages.
This report was also accepted after another lengthy examination process.
Finally, after years of research, development, technical evaluations, and technical defense of our invention, the Clean&Safe method was officially granted a patent on February 21, 2024.
Following publication of the patent, the six-month opposition period was completed without any objections being filed from anywhere in the world. As a result, the Clean&Safe method became an officially patented and protected invention.
Clean&Safe is more than a product line.
It is a unique manufacturing and protection approach born from years of research, development.

What Is Meaning of Safe Contact?
As part of the Clean&Safe method, the fabric surface that comes into contact with your baby’s skin contains no dyes or additives.
This special fabric structure allows your baby’s skin to touch only 100% organic cotton. We call this approach Safe Contact.
Independent testing by Eurofins Laboratories confirmed that Clean&Safe fabrics contain no detectable levels of heavy metals, azo dyes, allergenic dyes, carcinogenic substances, formaldehyde, APs, or APEOs.
Is Pre-Washing Necessary for Clean&Safe Products?
No. Clean&Safe products are specially cleaned and sealed in their protective packaging before leaving our facility.
The protective package helps preserve the garment during storage, transportation, and retail display. As long as the package remains unopened, the garment stays protected until first use.
For this reason, pre-washing is not necessary.
What Is the Purpose of the Protective Package?
